“In every walk with nature, one receives far more than one seeks.”
– John Muir, 19 July 1877
The biophilia hypothesis also called BET suggests that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature and other forms of life. Edward O. Wilson introduced and popularized the hypothesis in his book, Biophilia. He defines biophilia as “the urge to affiliate with other forms of life”.
From this concept, Biophilic Design for the workplace has evolved. According to a recent report, “Global Impact of Biophilic Design in the Workplace”, 88% of surveyed workers reported having direct views and access to the natural elements indoors improved their sense of well-being. Biophilic design can reduce stress, improve cognitive function and creativity, improve our sense of well-being and expedite healing; as the world population continues to urbanize, these qualities are ever more important in our workplaces.
Most architects and design firms are already using the Biophilic Design concepts in new and renovated buildings. But, short of demolishing existing office spaces, how can we incorporate Biophilic Design into our workspaces?
We have found that when more natural materials – wood, stone, water, and light – are incorporated into your work areas you can fulfill at least some of the human desire to connect with nature. This can be as simple as adding a reclaimed wood wall or natural materials in furniture adjacent to a window as part of your open work area design; adding lights that mimic outdoor light when access to outdoor light is limited and creating a soothing color palette with bright splashes of color. The “Global Impact of Biophilic Design in the Workplace Report” also states those working in environments that incorporate more natural elements reported levels of creativity 15% higher than the levels reported by those who work in environments devoid of nature.
Why does this matter? Recruiting and retaining the best-of-the-best workforce in your company can be improved by an environment that nurtures a feeling of well-being and creativity.
B&H Office Solutions has embraced this concept and would welcome the opportunity to help you.
